Kailash Yatra from Kathmandu

Trip Overview

Mount Kailash (6,714m) is marked as one of the most holy mountains of Tibet. It is famous by various names like Tise, Kailash or Kang Rinpoche (Jewel of the Snows). Mt Meru (Kailash). This mountain is sacred to the Hindus, Buddhists, Janis, and the Bonpo religion. They consider this mountain top to be the centre of the physical and metaphysical universe. Hindu considers this mountain to be the seat of Shiva. In a similar way, Buddhists consider this mountain top to be the terrestrial projection of the cosmic mandala of Dhyani Buddhas and Boddhisatvas representing the Wheel of Life.

Every year, during the month of May, Buddhist festival called Saga Dawa is performed around this mountain and most of the devotees embark in this tour during the time of full moon to glance the beauty of this peak. This mountain is forbidden for climbing due to the religious belief as Mount Kailash is the abode of immortal Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is believed to be seating at this mountain practicing austerities and meditation. He at times dances with his cosmic beloved, goddess Parvati in this mountain. Lord Shiva is the epitome of all gods and he likes smoking ganja (marijuana). Many of the holy saint and sages visit this place every year to pay their homage to Lord Shiva. There is also an interesting legend attached to this place. It is written in the Buddhist scripture that during the 5th Century BC, Lord Buddha had magically visited Kailash and thus it helped in publicizing Buddhism in Tibet.
