Tsum Valley Trek Overview
The Tsum Valley is located in northern Gorkha and is rich in ancient art, culture, and religion. The locals trace their origins to Tibet and speak their own dialect. As one of the most remote Himalayan valleys, its pristine beauty makes the trek both enjoyable and rewarding. The valley offers breathtaking views of several mountain ranges, including Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, and Boudha Himal.
The Tsum Valley trek was restricted until 2008. The villagers are deeply spiritual, as evidenced by the many monasteries in the area. The Rachen and Mu Gompas are among the most prominent. This region is also abundant in biodiversity, with forests, rivers, and caves that make it a must-visit destination.
The trek begins with a scenic drive to Arughat, followed by a short journey to Soti Khola. From here, we follow the Budhi Gandaki River upstream, passing through villages and forests full of rhododendron and pine trees. We then head to Jagat and Lokpa, the gateway to Tsum Valley.
From Lokpa, we continue north to Chumling, home to three famous monasteries: Pango Gumba, Gurwa Gumba, and Mani Dhungyr. The village offers stunning views of Manaslu (8,163m), Himal Chuli (7,893m), and Ganesh Himal (7,140m). On the following day, we leave Chumling and head to Chhokangparo, passing through Domje, the largest village in Tsum Valley.
As we ascend, the sub-tropical forests gradually give way to alpine pastures and high mountain deserts. From Chhokangparo, we proceed north, passing Milarepa’s cave (the most sacred cave in the region) and then to Phurbe, eventually reaching the Nile. After a night at the Nile, we head further north to Mu Gompa, the northernmost point of the trek.
Legend has it that the Buddhist guru Milarepa meditated in caves within the Tsum Valley’s mountains. The Shear Khola, originating from the Ganesh Himal glacier, drains this valley into the Budhi Gandaki River.
After reaching Mu Gompa, we begin our return journey, following a slightly different route through Phurbe to Rachen Gompa on the ninth day. From Rachen Gompa, we head south to Domje and then onward to Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4,800m) via Gumba Lungdang.
From Ganesh Himal, we retrace our steps to Lokpa and then to Jagat. After a night in Jagat, we continue to Lapu Bensi and finally return to Arughat, where we take a local bus back to Kathmandu.

Tsum Valley is one of Nepal’s most remote and sacred valleys, located to the north of the Kathmandu Valley. Recently, it has become one of Nepal’s most sought-after off-the-beaten-path trekking destinations. The people are mostly of Tibetan origin, speaking their own dialect and wearing traditional clothing. The untouched beauty of the landscape, along with views of some of the world’s highest peaks such as Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Boudha Himal, make this trek a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The best seasons to trek Tsum Valley are Spring and Autumn, when the weather is moderate and stable, offering clear skies and excellent views. If you prefer to avoid crowds, the Summer and Winter seasons are quieter, though they require extra preparation due to the harsher conditions.

This sacred valley, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, offers remote landscapes and marvelous views of peaks like Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, and Boudha Himal.
The name “Tsum” originates from the Tibetan word “Tsombo,” meaning “clear.” The locals, known as “Tsumbus,” refer to their valley as Beyul Kyimolung, or the hidden valley of happiness. According to legend, the valley was designated by the Buddhist saint Padmasambhava in the 8th century as a sanctuary for those fleeing war, religious persecution, and famine.
The Tsum Valley trek typically starts at Machha Khola and spans 16 days. The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu, passing through rivers, streams, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests.
