Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek Overview

The Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek is one of the best trekking experiences, offering a chance to explore diverse landscapes, including pastures, ridges, narrow clefts, and steep climbing trails. Along the way, you’ll witness towering mountain peaks, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and enjoy breathtaking views from the Gokyo Ri viewpoint.

From Gokyo Ri, the view of Mount Everest—the highest mountain in the world—and its neighboring peaks like Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu is truly world-class and awe-inspiring.

The Gokyo Valley is home to traditional stone houses, meadows along the shores of the beautiful Dudh Pokhari lake, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.

The trek begins in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. On the second morning, you will take a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to Everest, marking the start of your adventure.

Throughout the trek, you’ll be surrounded by stunning mountain views, rhododendron forests, and the sound of gushing rivers. These sights make the challenging journey through Gokyo Valley and the Renjo La Pass worthwhile.

The trek takes you through the serene Thame Valley and Renjo La Pass, offering everything you’d hope to experience in the Khumbu region: soaring peaks, lush valleys, rugged landscapes, forests, glaciers, wildlife, and the chance to experience Sherpa hospitality and their rich religious rituals and monasteries.

The Khumbu region is part of the Mahalangur Himalayan range and is home to four of the world’s highest peaks: Mount Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8585m), and Cho Oyu (8201m), along with other significant peaks like Ama Dablam, Kongde, Thame Peak, Thamserku, and Khangtega. You will also view the Ngozumpa Glacier (36km), the largest glacier in Nepal, and witness spectacular panoramic views from Gokyo Ri (5357m). From this vantage point, you can enjoy 360-degree views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Pumori, Lingtren, Chola Peak, Machherma Peak, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kusum Kangaru.

Sherpa villages, abundant within the Sagarmatha National Park, are another highlight. Their Buddhist culture is a major draw for trekkers, with the locals’ warm hospitality standing out, even in such a harsh environment. Sherpas are renowned for their strength, local knowledge, and ability to carry heavy loads, which make trekking at high altitudes possible.

The Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek, organized by Sherpa Expedition and Trekking, takes you to famous landmarks and villages, including Namche Bazaar, Dole, Gokyo, Gokyo Ri, Renjo La Pass, Lungden, and Thame village. The highest points on this trail are Gokyo Ri (5357m) and Renjo La Pass (5345m). At these altitudes, you’ll encounter unique vegetation and wildlife, including musk deer, wild mountain goats, brightly colored pheasants (Lophophorus), snow leopards, mountain hawks, and snow ducks. It’s even rumored that the elusive Yeti inhabits this region.

The 14-day Gokyo Valley via Renjo La Trek with Sherpa Expedition and Trekking is a visually spectacular and unforgettable journey.

Day 02: Fly to Lukla or Manthali/Ramechhap and Trek to Phakding (2,610 m) Free day for arrangements

Your trek begins early in the morning as you follow the northern banks of the Dudh Koshi River. Along the way, you’ll cross several suspension bridges, including the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge. Shortly after, you’ll reach the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint, where your permits will be registered. From there, the trail ascends through dense forests, offering your first view of the majestic Mt. Everest. The journey continues to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant gateway to Everest Base Camp.

Manthali to Lukla Flight (March, April, May, October, and November)
During peak seasons, including March, April, May, October, and November, flights to Lukla are operated from Ramechhap/Manthali due to increased air traffic. Manthali/Ramechhap is approximately a 5 to 6-hour drive from Kathmandu. On this day, we wake up between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM, take an escorted shuttle to Manthali Airport in a shared tourist vehicle, and board a 20-minute flight to Lukla.

Kathmandu to Lukla Flight (January, February, June, July, August, September, and December)
During the non-peak seasons (January, February, June, July, August, September, and December), flights to Lukla are typically operated from Kathmandu. The decision to operate flights depends on the airline and the volume of travelers during a specific month. On this day, we wake up between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM, and our staff will escort you to the domestic terminal at Kathmandu Airport. From there, you will board a 35-minute flight to Lukla. Flights to Tenzing-Hillary Airport usually take place early in the morning. We recommend completing all packing and sorting the day before to avoid any rush on Day 2.

Once you reach Lukla, enjoy breakfast while our guide arranges porters (one porter per two clients). The trek begins with a descent toward the Dudh Kosi River, where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar, just above Chaunikharka (2,713 m). The walk is easy, and after passing through the small village of Ghat (2,550 m), we continue with a short walk to Phakding.

You will have time to arrange your belongings and shop in Kathmandu, or explore the city. If needed, we can also arrange a qualified guide for you.

Get a good rest as your adventure will begin early tomorrow. Early in the morning, we will fly to Lukla from either the Kathmandu or Ramechhap domestic airport. If flying from Ramechhap, you will need to drive for 4 to 5 hours early in the morning to catch the flight. The views from the plane will heighten your excitement for the trek. Upon landing, we are welcomed by our crew and the cool Himalayan breeze. We pass beautiful Sherpa villages, agricultural fields, mani stones, and prayer wheels. The spectacular view of Kusum Kanguru awaits as we reach Phakding. Overnight at a guesthouse.

Trek Distance: 8km

Trek Duration: 4 Hours

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and hike to Phakding.

We continue trekking along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, crossing the majestic river multiple times on exciting suspension bridges adorned with prayer flags. After entering Sagarmatha National Park, the trail climbs steeply, offering breathtaking views.

Namche Bazaar, known as the Gateway to Everest, is home to a variety of quality restaurants, hotels, lodges, shops, money exchange services, internet cafes, and bakeries. It is the largest town along the Everest trail.

After breakfast, we begin our trek to Namche Bazaar. We cross several suspension bridges while enjoying views of Thamserku. Following the Dudh Koshi River, we pass through small Sherpa villages, reaching Monjo, where we officially enter Sagarmatha National Park. We stop at Jorsalle village for lunch before continuing along the riverbank through pine forests. We then cross the highest suspension bridge in the Everest region and begin the steep ascent toward Namche Bazaar. Along the way, we catch our first glimpse of Mount Everest.

We arrive in Namche Bazaar and stay overnight at a guesthouse.

An early flight from Kathmandu will take you to Lukla, with a flight duration of about 35 minutes. During the flight, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the mountains and terrain. Lukla Airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world, making the experience even more thrilling.

Explore the small town of Lukla, wandering its streets, tea houses, and eateries. When ready, begin your hike toward Phakding. You will cross several suspension bridges and pass through stunning landscapes, eventually arriving in Phakding after a few hours of easy hiking. Rest for the night at Phakding.

Trek Distance: 11km
Highest Altitude: (3,440 m)
Trek Duration: 3 hours

Day 04: Namche Bazaar Acclimatization Day Hike to Hotel Everest View and return. Alternatively, hike from Phakding to Namche Bazaar.

We spend a day in Namche Bazaar to acclimatize and adjust to the thinning air. A short trek will take us to a museum known for its exhibits showcasing the traditional customs of the Sherpa people.

We will also hike up to the Syangboche Airport near the Everest View Hotel. From here, we can enjoy stunning views of the Himalayas, with breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the Khumbu peaks.

The hike from Phakding to Namche Bazaar includes many ups and downs. After about 2 hours of hiking, we will reach Monjo, a small town. From Monjo, we follow a smooth trail for about 1.5 hours, crossing a few suspension bridges, before beginning an uphill climb to Namche Bazaar.

The climb lasts about 2 to 3 hours, and upon reaching the entrance to Namche Bazaar, we register at the checkpoint and walk for another 15 minutes to reach the town.

Namche is a charming small town that becomes quite busy during trekking season. You will stay in a comfortable hotel with Wi-Fi and hot showers.

We wake up to a beautiful view of Mt. Kongde Ri as we enjoy breakfast. Today is our acclimatization day. At higher altitudes, the air contains less oxygen, so we must allow our bodies time to adjust. To aid acclimatization, we take a short day hike to the Sagarmatha National Park Museum and Khumjung Village. During this hike, you’ll visit the monastery, which houses the supposed Yeti scalp, and enjoy the Everest Viewpoint. The views from the museum include stunning panoramas of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and many other pristine peaks.

On the way back, we can stop at the world’s highest 5-star hotel for a cup of tea. Afterwards, we explore Namche Bazaar. This bustling town is a major trade center in the Khumbu region, densely populated by Sherpa people. It is full of trekkers who have either completed or are preparing for the Everest Base Camp trek. The streets of Namche are lined with bakeries, cafes, equipment stores, jewelry shops, and restaurants.

Overnight at a guesthouse.

Trek Distance: 8 kilometers
Highest Altitude: (3,880 m)
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

Day 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,200 m) – 6 to 7 hours. Acclimatization at Namche Bazaar.

After breakfast, we start our trek on the same route towards Everest Base Camp until we reach a place called Sanasa. From there, the trail ascends towards Mongla (4,000 m).

Throughout the trail, we are accompanied by outstanding views of the mountains. Passing through beautiful rhododendron forests, we descend towards Phortse Tenga and then steeply climb to reach Dole. The total walking time will be approximately 6 hours from Namche Bazaar.

Acclimatization is crucial to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Take time to explore the traditional villages and the streets of Namche Bazaar. Wake up early, have breakfast, and start hiking north. You will reach a small village called Khunde. If you’re lucky, you may experience the peaceful Buddhist chanting from the local monastery, and enjoy the spectacular valley views.

Just 10 minutes east of Khunde is Khumjung village, where you’ll have your first sighting of the sacred Ama Dablam mountain. You can rest here, have lunch, and then head south to the Everest View Hotel, where, as the name suggests, you can enjoy a view of Everest.

In the evening, relax in Namche with some hot tea and bread. If needed, you can withdraw cash and buy trekking gear here. This is one of the few places where you can find such facilities, so take advantage of it. Don’t forget to enjoy a hot bath, as it will be rare for the rest of your trek.

After breakfast, we ascend for 25 minutes to the top of Namche Bazaar for a beautiful view of Kongde Ri. The gentle trail from here to Kyanjuma was built by Pasang Sherpa with donations from trekkers. Soon, we reach a junction where the Gokyo Lakes Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek separate. We take the Gokyo Lakes Trek path and head up to Mong La Danda. From here, the views of Mt. Ama Dablam and Thamserku are incredible. After taking some photos, we descend to Phortse Thanga for lunch.

Between Phortse Thanga and Dole, we have the best chance of spotting the rare and majestic Musk Deer. Afterward, we ascend for another couple of hours through birch and juniper forests until we reach Dole, a beautiful village with stunning views of Thamserku.

Overnight at a guesthouse.

Trek Distance:  14km
Highest Altitude: (4,200 m)/(4038m)
Trek Duration:6-7 Hours

Day 06: Trek from Dole to Machherma (4,470 m) – 5 to 6 hours.

After an early breakfast, we continue our climb along the sides of the beautiful valley, passing through small thorny bushes, which gradually lead us to the scrub juniper.

As we ascend, the altitude increases, and we pass the summer settlement areas where yaks are taken to graze in the warmer months.

During the hike, we are treated to stunning views of Mount Cho Oyu. After 5 to 6 hours of walking, we finally reach Machherma.

After spending a day in Namche and acclimatizing, you will continue your journey with more ease, as your body has already adjusted to the higher altitude. Today, we cross the 4,000-meter mark, but thanks to the acclimatization, there’s no need to worry about altitude sickness.

The hike from Dole to Machherma is exciting. You’ll walk through dense forests, leaving the classic Everest Base Camp route. The uphill trek can be tiring, but you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. Along the way, you will pass ancient monasteries and small Sherpa settlements. After about 6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Dole and rest at a local teahouse for the night.

The trek from Dole to Machherma takes around 4 hours, following a gradual uphill path. After about 15 minutes of ascending from Dole, you’ll get a clear view of Mt. Cho Oyu. There are two small villages—Lafarma and Luza—where you can take a rest. By the time you reach Machherma, you will be above the tree line, and the scenery will be extraordinary. Machherma is a quiet village located near a river. After lunch, you can visit the river and explore the village before retiring for the night at a guesthouse.

Trek Distance: 8km
Highest Altitude:(4,470 m)
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 Hours

Day 07: Trek from Machherma to Gokyo (4,800 m) – 5 to 6 hours.

Today’s trek takes us to one of our main destinations, Gokyo (4,800 m). We begin by following the scenic path to Pangka and descend slightly as we walk alongside a melt-water river flowing down the west side of the Ngozumpa Glacier.

The trail leads us to a staircase, and at the top, we reach the first lake, Longponga, located at an elevation of 4,650 m. Continuing on, we follow the valley to the second lake, at 4,800 m, also known as Taujun Lake.

After some more walking, we arrive at the stunning Gokyo Valley. Gokyo is a collection of stone houses and walled pastures on the shores of a large lake called Dudh Pokhari.

Today’s hike involves some pleasant walking through pine and oak forests, with a mix of smooth and steep paths. The route offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes.

After gaining some altitude and hiking through gentle slopes, we reach the small settlement of Machhermo, where we will spend the night.

Today, we also visit the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, a highlight of our trek. We stop at a village along the way to enjoy some tea and take in the stunning surroundings. About an hour after our tea break, we will reach the first lake. After another hour of hiking, we will see the second lake nearby, both mesmerizing with their blue-green hue. We continue for another hour and arrive at the third lake, where the views of Mt. Cho Oyu add to the beauty of the experience.

We take some time to appreciate the tranquil lake before having lunch. Afterward, we walk up to Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas. Due to rapid melting caused by climate change, we are fortunate to witness it before it potentially disappears. Finally, we continue on to Gokyo Village.

Overnight at a guesthouse.

Trek Distance: 9km
Highest Altitude:(4750 m)/(4,800 m)
Trek Duration:  4 to 5 Hours

Day 08: Trek to Gokyo Ri (5,483 m) and back to Gokyo – 5 to 6 hours

Early in the morning, we embark on a steep climb to the top of Gokyo Ri at an elevation of 5,483 m. The effort is well worth it, as the views from the summit are nothing short of spectacular. From here, you will be rewarded with stunning vistas of the Gokyo Valley, the massive Ngozumpa Glacier, and a panoramic view of the entire Khumbu Himalayas, including the towering peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Gychung Kang.

After a hearty breakfast at Machhermo, we begin our trek towards Gokyo. The path involves a steady uphill hike to reach the village of Gokyo, which is nestled beside beautiful lakes. Along the way, we will pass rocky trails and be treated to breathtaking scenery, including views of Ngozumpa Glacier and Gokyo Lake I, as well as a few monasteries.

The small village of Gokyo is an ancient Sherpa settlement. Take some time to explore this charming place, where you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains, including Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and, towering above all, Everest.

Later in the day, we will head back to Gokyo Ri for a second early morning start. The goal is to reach the summit before sunrise, when the peaks of the Everest region glow in the early light. This steep 600-meter climb offers an incredible view of four 8,000-meter peaks: Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. After taking in the views, we return to Gokyo village for breakfast.

In the afternoon, we explore Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier. This day, filled with beautiful sights and relatively easy walking, will be a memorable one for all. As we watch the sunset over the mountains, the experience will leave a lasting impression.

We overnight at the same guest house.

Day 09: Trek to Lunden via Renjo La Pass

A three-hour trek at the break of dawn leads us to the astonishing Renjo La Pass (5,483 meters / 17,988 feet), situated in the Everest region. The altitude of Renjo La Pass adds to its allure, standing as a truly remarkable high point.

The vistas are breathtaking, offering panoramic views of Mount Everest, the elegant Cholatse, and the formidable Taboche, making the experience exhilarating.

After crossing the pass, we continue our trek down toward Lunden, our destination for the day. Along the trail, we will be surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks. The total trek for the day will take approximately 7 hours.

The climb from Gokyo village to Gokyo Ri is challenging. It is a steep ascent up rocky terrain, with large boulders and hard rocks. The uphill climb is tough, but the reward at the summit is extraordinary. From the top, you’ll be able to see Gokyo Lake, Mount Everest, and even the Cho La Pass.

This day also serves as our second acclimatization day. You can choose to explore Gokyo village or trek to the fifth Gokyo Lake. Enjoy the beautiful day in Gokyo, soaking in its traditional charm and natural beauty.

We start the day early, walking alongside Dudh Pokhari for about two hours before ascending toward Renjo La Pass. The views from the pass are similar to those from Gokyo Ri, but the vantage point offers a different perspective. From here, we can see Gokyo village, Ngozumpa Glacier, and the emerald green lakes. The panoramic views of Mount Everest from the top of the pass are stunning.

After crossing the pass, the trail descends down a stone staircase and over loose rocks to reach the south bank of Angladumba Tsho Lake. We navigate this sometimes-slippery terrain carefully, passing Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake. We continue walking down a narrow valley filled with giant boulders until we reach Lungden.

About 150 meters above Thame, we reach the Thame Monastery, a picturesque site nestled among the homes of monks and local villagers. The monastery is perched on the side of a hill, offering an impressive view of the surrounding valley.

This monastery is also the location for the spring celebration of the Mani Rimdu festival, held annually around the middle of May.

Today, we will cross one of the highest passes in the Everest region – the Renjo La Pass. This scenic pass offers panoramic views of some of the highest mountains in the world. The hike involves steep slopes and challenging terrain, but the rewards are worth the effort.

The journey is exciting as we head toward the northern valley, navigating through rugged landscapes. The terrain is tough, providing a glimpse of the harsh conditions typical of the Tibetan valley.

Day 11: Trek from Thame to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) – 3 to 4 hours

Thame is a traditional Sherpa village that has avoided the crowds trekking to Everest, and it is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the region. The village is notably the birthplace of Apa Sherpa, who has reached the summit of Everest 21 times!

The trek itself is peaceful, offering excellent views of the surrounding mountains. The path winds in and out of the forest along the side of a canyon, providing stunning vistas. Today, we continue our journey by walking downhill from Thame. The trek is easy and short, with the final destination being Namche Bazaar.

After breakfast in Lunden, we begin our hike towards Thame. The trail is mostly downhill, and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful scenery. We walk along a narrow valley, following the Bhote Koshi River. The beauty of the valley and river is truly awe-inspiring as we descend towards Thame.

Thame is a small Sherpa settlement where Tenzing Norgay spent much of his childhood. The town is home to a monastery and reflects the ancient Sherpa culture.

Take time to explore this beautiful town before resting for the night.

As we continue our trek down from the Sherpa villages of Thame, we leave the mountains behind us. Today, we return to Namche Bazaar, the trekking hub of the Everest region, where you can experience the famous hospitality of the Sherpas. Namche Bazaar is also a great place to pick up souvenirs before your journey ends. We will overnight at a guest house.
