The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas of Nepal, covering a total distance of approximately 220 kilometers over 20 days. This trek offers a breathtaking journey through high mountain ranges, showcasing the diverse culture and stunning landscapes of Nepal.

The trek starts in Besishahar, a small town in the Lamjung district. The first few days are spent trekking through rural areas, visiting small villages and local communities, providing a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people living in the region.

As the trek progresses, the landscape transforms into a more alpine and barren region, surrounded by towering peaks and glaciers. In this section, trekkers will reach Thorong La Pass (5,416m), the highest point of the trek, which offers stunning views of the Annapurna mountain range. The trek continues through the holy city of Muktinath, eventually reaching the remote village of Jomsom before making the final descent back to Pokhara.

The trek allows trekkers to experience the beauty and diversity of the Annapurna region, from lush forests and terraced rice fields to snow-capped mountains and deep gorges. Along the way, trekkers will encounter a wide range of flora and fauna, including the national bird of Nepal, the Danphe, and other Himalayan wildlife. Moreover, the Annapurna Circuit Trek offers the chance to experience the unique culture and traditions of the region, as trekkers interact with local people who have lived in the area for generations. The hospitality of the locals, their customs, and the stories they share make for an enriching and memorable experience.

Although the standard itinerary for the Annapurna Circuit Trek spans 20 days, it can be customized and completed within a time frame of 7-28 days, depending on available time, starting and ending points, physical fitness, walking pace, and other factors.

This Annapurna Circuit Trek offers a chance to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas, while also providing insight into the rich culture and traditions of the region. The 20-day trek is a truly unforgettable experience that will leave a lasting impression on all who undertake it. For adventurers worldwide, trekking ranks high on their checklists, and the 20-day Annapurna Circuit Trek is the perfect way to relive the triumphs of notable trekkers with Hiking Bees.

The trek begins in Chame and heads towards Upper Pisang, walking through oak forests and Dhukur Pokhari. You will trek to Manang and Thorong Phedi, followed by Muktinath and Jomsom. Along the trail, you will pass through crimson rhododendron forests and enjoy views of the majestic Himalayan ranges.

You will also walk through the world’s deepest gorge, Kali Gandaki Gorge, with views of Mt. Annapurna I (8,091m) in the east and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m) in the west. After spending some delightful moments in Machhapuchhre and Annapurna Base Camp, you will experience the profound beauty of the surrounding mountains. Following the moraines and icy pathways, you will make a detour to Jhinu Hot Springs for a relaxing dip after the exhausting journey before driving back to Pokhara. The trip concludes upon your return to Kathmandu.

Day 09: Rest and Acclimatization at Manang Trek from Pisang to Manang (3,440m / 11,286ft) Rest day for acclimatization before continuing the trek to Kagbeni

Acclimatization in Manang

To help with acclimatization, we will spend a full day in Manang. You are free to explore the village at your own pace. However, we will stay active by participating in side hikes. One option is to hike to Gangapurna Lake, where you can admire the stunning views of Annapurna III, Tilicho, Pisang, and Chulu Peaks. The area is also home to several monasteries that you may wish to visit.

Additionally, we will visit the Himalayan Rescue Association in Vajra Village to learn about acute mountain sickness, its symptoms, and preventative measures. After a relaxing day of exploration in Manang, we will have acclimatized to the altitude and be prepared for the next leg of our trek.

The 9th day of the journey includes a trek to Manang, with two route options: the northern route (via Ghyaru) and the southern route (via Hongde). The southern route is easier, while the northern route presents a greater challenge. We will reach Manang after crossing Bryanga, where we will spend the night at a lodge.

In the morning, we will visit the sacred Muktinath temple, a revered site for both Hindus and Buddhists. During Hindu festivals, pilgrims from Nepal and India flock to the temple. After paying our respects, we will return to the lodge for breakfast while enjoying the beautiful views around Muktinath. Then, we will head towards Kagbeni.

Throughout the journey, we will follow a gradual incline through desert-like landscapes, with cool winds blowing in our faces. The trails are relatively easy, though the wind tends to pick up speed in the afternoon, sometimes causing small sandstorms. As we pass through juniper and pine forests, we will reach Kagbeni, a village known for its historical buildings, stupas, prayer wheels, and ancient architecture. We will spend the night in Kagbeni.

Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka

After a day of acclimatization in Manang, we will continue our trek. From Manang, we head towards Tenki Village, crossing several beautiful streams. We then leave the Marshyangdi Valley and head northwest towards Jar Sang Khola Valley, navigating a trail with many uphills and downhills. Along the way, we will pass through dense juniper forests and a few pastures.

We will also pass through Gunsan Village, known for its houses with flat mud roofs. After crossing a small river via a wooden bridge, we make our way up the spectacular valley to an open, peaceful meadow known as Yak Kharka.

Acclimatization Day in Yak Kharka

The 10th day is dedicated to acclimatization at the higher altitude, which is best done through light activity rather than rest. You can choose to take a short hike to the ridge near the Gangapurna Glacier or walk to the cave above Manang village. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the village, learning about its people and culture. Acclimatization measures will be taken before we proceed to higher altitudes. We will spend the night in a lodge in Manang.

Trek from Kagbeni to Marpha

After breakfast, we begin our trek from Kagbeni to Marpha. The trail starts with a couple of hours of gradual descent. We will trek alongside the Kali Gandaki River, with scenery mostly consisting of semi-arid landscapes. The trail is generally gravelly and dusty. Along the way, we will pass several villages, including Ekle Bhatti, Jomsom, and Syang.

After about four hours of trekking, we will arrive in Marpha, a village known for its organic apple gardens. Marpha is often called the “Apple Capital,” and it features numerous traditional houses and structures. Upon arrival, you can take some time to stroll around the village or visit the apple orchards. In the evening, you may also want to try some local apple brandy. We will spend the night in Marpha.

We begin the day as early as possible, ready to conquer one of the most challenging parts of the trek. From Thorong Phedi, we ascend to Thorong La Pass, the highest point of this journey. Due to the high altitude and low oxygen levels, this hike will be physically demanding. We will take it slow and steady, but the effort will be well worth it. Despite the difficulty of the climb, the view from the pass is absolutely breathtaking.

From the pass, you will enjoy panoramic views of majestic mountains stretching northwards into Tibet, while on the other side, the Annapurna massifs will greet you with their grandeur.

After reaching Thorong La Pass, we descend towards Muktinath, where we will visit the famous Muktinath Temple. This sacred site holds great significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Buddhists refer to it as Chuming Gyatsa, which means “Hundred Waters” in Tibetan, a name fitting for a temple complex with 108 water spouts. Additionally, there is an eternal flame inside the temple grounds.

We will spend the night in Muktinath.

Trek from Muktinath to Thorong Phedi

On the 12th day, we will make our way back towards Thorong Phedi. The trail starts off relatively easy but becomes more challenging as it approaches the cliffs near Thorong Phedi. For those looking to shorten the following day’s hike, there is the option of staying at a higher camp. We will spend the night in a lodge at Thorong Phedi.

Trek to Ghorepani

After relaxing in Tatopani, we will continue our trek. Our destination for the day is Ghorepani, where we will follow an uphill trail through Ghara and Sikha. The trek begins with a crossing of the suspension bridge over the Kali Gandaki River. From there, we will ascend gradually, and the view will eventually open up to picturesque terraced fields. As we walk through terraced fields and dense rhododendron forests, we will eventually reach Chitre. The trail will continue its gradual ascent towards Ghorepani. In the evening, we will relax and enjoy the magnificent vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Gears and Equipment

Equipment Checklist
We recommend that you bring only the essential clothing and accessories for the trek. Keep in mind that you can also purchase equipment in Kathmandu. Porters will carry the bulk of the luggage, but the weight limit for your personal luggage is 9 kg. We assign one porter for every two trekkers, and the combined weight of their luggage should not exceed 18 kg. Although individual preferences may vary, here is a suggested equipment list for packing.

Acclimatization
During high-altitude treks, such as our 20-day Annapurna Circuit Trek with Annapurna Base Camp, it is vital to take an acclimatization or rest day. Acclimatization allows your body to adjust to increasing elevations, changing surroundings, and colder temperatures, helping to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

We will take an acclimatization day in Manang, located at 3,500 meters. It is essential to remain active on this day to help your body adapt to the high altitude. We will follow the principle “Climb high, sleep low” by exploring the area and going on short hikes.

Our guides are highly trained in first aid and carry comprehensive first-aid kits, including oximeters to monitor blood oxygen levels. If you feel any discomfort, please inform your guide immediately. They will take swift action to ensure your safety.

Best Time to Visit
The trek are during the autumn and spring seasons. Both seasons offer optimal weather and temperatures for trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal, making them the peak trekking periods. Precipitation levels are relatively low, ensuring the trails remain dry and in excellent condition. Additionally, visibility is superb, providing clear views of the stunning mountain vistas and landscapes.

The average temperature during these seasons ranges from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, making for a comfortable trekking experience. Spring is particularly ideal for naturalists, botanists, and zoologists, as the flora and fauna are most active. During this time, you can witness the rhododendron forests and Himalayan wildflowers in full bloom, showcasing vibrant colors. Autumn, on the other hand, coincides with Nepal’s biggest festivals, offering a festive atmosphere throughout the region.

Accommodation for the Trek
Our 20-day Annapurna Circuit Trek with Annapurna Base Camp includes all lodging facilities, except for accommodation in Kathmandu. The package covers one night’s stay in Pokhara and includes lodging during the trek. Accommodations will be in lodges on a twin-share basis. Please note that the trekking route passes through rural areas of Nepal, so the lodgings will not be luxurious hotels.

FAQs for Everest Base Camp Trek

What is the Annapurna Trek?

The Annapurna Trek is a renowned trekking route in north-central Nepal that circumnavigates the Annapurna massif. This trek takes you through diverse landscapes, including subtropical forests, terraced paddy fields, alpine meadows, deserts, and high Himalayan passes. Along the way, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of peaks such as Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare, while also experiencing the rich culture of the local communities.

What is the best season and time of year for the Annapurna Trek?

The best time to trek is during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons. These periods offer stable weather, clear views, good trail conditions, and comfortable temperatures.

Autumn (September-November) is the prime season for trekking the Annapurna and ABC, as the weather is stable, dry, and clear. The atmosphere is also festive during this time, as autumn is a major celebratory season in Nepal. Spring (March-May) is another excellent season for trekking, as the trails come alive with vibrant wildflowers and rhododendrons in bloom. The clear days are ideal for trekking.

From December to February, the region experiences the coldest weather of the year. Between June and August, the summer season brings increased humidity and higher temperatures. This is also when the monsoon arrives, resulting in cloudy skies and muddy, slippery trails. There are higher risks of flooding and landslides throughout the country during this period.

What kind of accommodation arrangements can I expect during the trek?

Teahouses (small lodges) are available along the trek, offering basic rooms with shared bathrooms. Some teahouses in more popular areas provide additional comforts, such as private rooms and hot showers. We carefully select the best teahouses and lodges in the trekking regions to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible.

On this trekking route, the only accommodation options are teahouses and lodges. Generally, arranges your stay in the best available teahouses or lodges, offering single or double rooms, mostly in dormitory-style. Rooms come with a mattress, pillow, and blanket. Very few teahouses provide rooms with heaters, and the blankets offered may not be sufficient to protect you from the cold. Therefore, it is advisable to bring a warm sleeping bag, which you can purchase or rent at shops in Kathmandu.

What kind of weather and temperatures can we expect during the trek?

Weather can significantly impact the trek, especially at higher altitudes. Heavy snowfall can close passes, while rain at lower altitudes may create slippery trails. Temperatures can reach 25°C or higher during the summer and drop below -20°C in the winter. During the autumn and spring seasons, temperatures typically range from 10°C to 20°C, making these periods ideal for trekking.

What kind of meals will be provided during the trek?

Teahouses offer a variety of meals, typically including Nepalese staples like dal bhat tarkari (lentil soup with rice and vegetables), noodles, soups, and Tibetan bread. Western dishes such as pasta, pizza, and omelets are also available. Our package includes three meals per day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lunch and dinner typically feature the authentic Nepali dal bhat, which includes rice, lentils, seasonal vegetables, spinach, and pickle. If you prefer something else, you can choose from the wide variety of items available on the lodge’s menu.

Teahouses and lodges serve Nepalese, Asian, and Continental cuisine, including pizzas. While the food is prepared hygienically, the taste of Western dishes may not meet your expectations due to limited resources. We usually recommend eating vegetarian food to minimize the risk of illness. We ensure that the food is hygienic, the kitchens are clean, and the meals provide the necessary nutrition and immunity for the trek.
