The Langtang Gosainkunda hike is perfect for those who want to experience Nepal’s mid-hills, visit high-altitude lakes—including the sacred Gosainkunda Lake—and explore other Himalayan glaciers. The trek is located just north of Kathmandu, near the Nepal-Tibet border.
The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek combines three of Nepal’s most popular trekking routes into one. The eastern part of Rasuwa District, bordering Tibet to the north, is filled with river-carved valleys nestled between towering mountains. Langtang Valley is one such river-cut valley, located between the Langtang Range of the Himalayas. Gosainkunda Lake, a revered Hindu site, sits at an altitude of 4,380 meters at the southern edge of the district. After trekking to Gosainkunda, you will cross the famous Lauribina Pass (4,610m) and enter the Helambu region, another well-known trekking area in Nepal. The trek also includes sections of the Helambu trek, which ends back in Kathmandu. Both of these areas lie within Langtang National Park, filled with natural beauty that will leave you in awe.
Rasuwa District is rich in natural beauty, with lofty peaks, pasturelands, rocky mountains, quaint villages, dense forests, whitewater rivers, and pleasant weather. Langtang National Park, established in 1976 to protect the area’s ecosystem, covers most of Rasuwa District. The park is a haven for rare species such as the red panda, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, ghoral, and langur monkeys.
The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek begins by navigating the deep valleys of the Langtang region, heading toward the highest point of the Langtang trek—Kyanjin Gompa at 3,860 meters. From Kyanjin, the trail retraces its steps back to Syabrubesi, then diverges south toward Gosainkunda Lake. The route is filled with stunning views and traditional Tamang settlements. The Tamang people, an Indo-Tibetan ethnic group, reside in northern Rasuwa and host trekkers in tea houses, offering a chance to experience their rich cultural practices.
The itinerary for the Langtang Gosainkunda trek can vary, but the journey typically begins in Kathmandu. From there, you’ll drive along the Trishuli River, which originates in the Langtang mountains, passing through the flat valleys of Nuwakot before reaching Rasuwa. The first stop is Syabrubesi, located at the confluence of the Bhotekoshi and Langtang Rivers. From Syabrubesi, the trail follows the Langtang Khola River, passing through deep gorges, dense forests, and streams.
The trek passes through Lama Hotel, Ghodatabela, Thangshyap, and Langtang village before reaching the final stop, Kyanjin Gompa. The return journey retraces the same trail, but after crossing Lama Hotel, we will diverge and head toward Thulo Syabru to begin the Gosainkunda Trek. The trek to Gosainkunda is mostly uphill, passing through pasturelands, with notable stops at Sing Gompa, Cholang Pati, Lauribina Pass, and Buddha Mandir.
From Gosainkunda, the trek continues south into the Helambu region. The trail passes through Ghopte, Kutumsang, and Chisapani, eventually entering Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park before reaching Kathmandu.
Langtang National Park, nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. Established in 1976, the park spans 1,710 square kilometers, featuring stunning landscapes, vibrant biodiversity, and a rich cultural heritage.
The park’s topography ranges from sub-tropical forests to alpine meadows, with snow-capped peaks towering above. The Langtang Valley, known as the “Valley of Glaciers,” offers breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung and its surrounding peaks. Trekkers may encounter rare wildlife such as red pandas, Himalayan tahrs, and a wide variety of bird species.
Within the park, ancient cultures thrive, with Tamang and Sherpa communities offering warm hospitality. Visitors can sample local cuisine, explore centuries-old monasteries, and immerse themselves in traditional village life.
Langtang National Park is not only a sanctuary for wildlife but also a vital source of freshwater for the Kathmandu Valley. Its conservation efforts are essential for protecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and ensuring a sustainable future for this unique wilderness.
For adventurers seeking a truly unforgettable Himalayan experience, Langtang National Park offers the perfect blend of nature, culture, and conservation.

After an early breakfast, we begin our scenic drive from Kathmandu Valley to Syabrubesi, located northwest of Kathmandu. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of raging rivers, terraced fields, traditional Nepali villages, and snow-capped peaks. The road is smooth up to Trishuli Bazaar, but becomes more rugged as we ascend to Dhunche before descending to Syabrubesi, a bustling town with much to explore—including riverside hot springs where you can relax.
Our journey begins with a morning drive to Syabrubesi, winding through diverse landscapes as we pass rural towns and farming villages. A key stop is Trishuli Bazaar in the Nuwakot district, where the sub-tropical surroundings gradually shift to terraced fields of maize and millet. As we ascend into cooler regions, you’ll notice changes in scenery and local culture.
We continue on to Dhunche (1,965 m.), the main town of the Langtang area and Rasuwa district, where the Langtang National Park headquarters is located. Trekking permits are carefully checked by park wardens from the Royal Nepalese Army, who protect the area. After a 1-2 hour descent, we arrive in Syabrubesi village, where we will spend the night, preparing for the adventures ahead in the heart of Langtang.
Note: A private jeep is available for an additional cost. Our airport representative will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your hotel in a private tourist vehicle. Detailed information about the trek plans and programs will be provided to you. Overnight stay at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Leaving Kathmandu behind, you’ll drive to Syabrubesi. The journey is long but offers spectacular views of the landscape and snow-capped mountains. Syabrubesi, the starting point of the trek, welcomes you with stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Annapurna, and more.
Trek Distance: 122km / 75.8miles
Highest Altitude: (1,400m/4593ft)
Trek Duration: 8 hours
From Syabrubesi, we begin our first day on the trail. We cross the Bhote Kosi River and continue along the Langtang River, passing through fertile jungle and terraced fields. As we move forward, we will pass a landslide area and climb up to Bamboo. The trail gradually ascends to Rimche, which is situated along the banks of the Langtang River. Along the way, you’ll pass several rural settlements and bamboo and birch forests, where you may spot rare local wildlife, including the red panda. From there, we continue trekking to the village of Lama Hotel.
The journey from Syabrubesi offers a pleasant trek with occasional uphill sections. However, most of the hike follows a relatively level trail, winding through terraced farmlands and picturesque villages. As we progress, the path gradually descends and converges with another route that originates from upper Syabru at the Riverside Lodge.
Continuing the trek, you’ll find yourself in a lush forest nestled within a gorge, following the course of the energetic Trisuli River. The trail mostly involves ascending through the cool shade of rhododendron and oak forests. After approximately six hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at a peaceful clearing, where Lama Hotel awaits. Here, you’ll rest for the night in the comfortable accommodations of a teahouse/lodge.
Today’s Trek:
We begin our Langtang Valley trek early in the morning, heading toward Syabrubesi by bus. The journey takes approximately 7 hours. Overnight stay at the guesthouse in Syabrubesi, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Langtang Valley Trek Day:
Today, we start our trek into Langtang Valley, following the Bhote Kosi and Langtang Rivers. The trail passes a beautiful waterfall, dense forests, hot springs, and villages. After leaving the Bamboo Hotel, we’ll begin the climb to Rimche (2,400m). After this, we continue trekking to Lama Hotel, where we’ll spend the night.
Trek Distance: 11.3km / 7miles
Highest Altitude: (1,500m/4921ft)
Trek Duration: 6 hours
We continue our trek alongside the Langtang River, ascending through dense forests. Along the way, we’ll catch glimpses of snow-capped peaks, encouraging us to press forward. Eventually, the narrow river valley opens up at Ghoda Tabela. In the past, this area hosted a Tibetan resettlement project. We’ll stop at the Ghoda Tabela army check-post to register our papers. Then, we’ll cross to the east side of the river as we approach Langtang Valley. We’ll pass prayer wheels powered by flowing water and colorful prayer flags before reaching the scenic Langtang Village, home to the Tamang people.
Starting your day’s trek from Lama Hotel, a 2-3 hour morning hike will take you to Ghoda Tabela. Nestled within a forest of pine, hemlock, and rhododendron trees, Ghoda Tabela reflects the signs of increasing altitude. In Nepali, “Ghoda Tabela” means “horse stable,” as the area once served as a trading hub where Tibetan ponies would rest and be traded between Langtang and Kathmandu.
Upon arrival at Ghoda Tabela, you’ll find a lodge and the park warden’s barrack, where your permits will be inspected once more. From here, the trail continues toward Langtang Valley. After about an hour of trekking from Ghoda Tabela, you’ll find shelter in the shade of alpine forests while following a gentle stream. Another hour of uphill trekking will bring you to the charming Langtang village, reached via winding trails with occasional ascents and descents.
Important Note: Langtang, once a beautiful village and a popular campsite, was devastated by a massive avalanche triggered by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25th, 2015. This caused widespread destruction throughout the valley.
Today’s Trek:
We begin our trek from Syabrubesi after breakfast, heading toward Lama Hotel. After about 6 hours of walking, we’ll reach our destination: Lama Hotel, where we’ll spend the night at a guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Trek Duration: 6 hours
We continue our ascent, passing through small abandoned villages and meadows. The wide Langtang Valley offers expansive panoramas of the mighty Himalayas. Our route crosses several tributaries and a glacial moraine. Finally, we arrive at what was once the largest settlement of our journey, Kyanjin Gompa, named after the nearby ancient monastery. Kyanjin Gompa remains mostly abandoned, having been badly affected by the 2015 earthquake. After lunch, we have the option to climb to the Kyajo Ri Viewpoint at 5,150m (19,600ft) for spectacular views of several mountain ranges and Langtang Valley. This trek is optional.
Starting from Langtang Village, the morning trek begins with a brief flat path before gradually ascending through thorny blueberry and alpine shrubs. Along the way, you’ll encounter a Mani prayer wall, and it’s customary to walk around it clockwise. As you continue eastward, the valley widens, revealing a lush meadow with awe-inspiring views of snow-capped peaks. The ascent becomes more challenging due to the altitude gain as you approach Kyanjin Gompa. Situated amid stunning scenery, Kyanjin Gompa offers views of Langtang Lirung, towering over 7,000 meters. Perched on a ridge of glacial debris, the monastery is surrounded by lodges and even a cheese factory. This trek takes about 3 hours, with lunch at Kyanjin Gompa, and a possible 3-hour round-trip hike to Kyanjin Ri if the weather permits. You’ll spend the night at a teahouse or lodge.
