Everest Base Camp with Island Peak – 19 Days

The Everest Base Camp with Island Peak Expedition takes you on a hike to the world-famous Everest Base Camp before attempting to scale Island Peak. The mountain was named by Eric Shipton in 1952, as its shape reminded him of an island in a sea of ice. It is also known as Imja Tse in the local Sherpa language.

We begin with an exciting mountain flight to Lukla and then trek up the Dudh Koshi Valley, surrounded by the towering peaks of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. It’s a steep ascent to Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Khumbu Sherpas. Resting here aids in acclimatization, helping your body adjust to the higher altitude in the days ahead.

Next, we continue trekking to Tengboche, Dingboche, Gorak Shep, and finally Everest Base Camp. After soaking in the magnificent views of Mt. Everest and surrounding peaks, we descend to Chukhung.

From Chukhung, we trek to Island Peak Base Camp to prepare for the ascent. It may take an extra day or two to summit, depending on weather conditions. After a successful climb of Island Peak, we trek back down to Lukla for our return flight to Kathmandu.

19-Day Everest Base Camp with Island Peak Climbing Expedition

Are you ready to meet the challenge of climbing your first mountain, accompanied by an experienced guide? Go beyond your comfort zone – the rewards will stay with you long after you leave Nepal. The adrenaline rush is indescribable.

This 19-day Everest Base Camp trek (5,364m) with Island Peak climbing (6,189m) is perfect for pushing your limits and ticking off your bucket list. With time to acclimatize and pre-climbing training at Island Peak Base Camp, you will be well-prepared and eager to reach the summit. This combination of trekking and climbing is carefully designed for both beginners and those seeking adventure.

Imja Tse, known as Island Peak, was named by early mountaineers who thought it resembled an island in a sea of ice. This trek is ideal for those who have never climbed a mountain and wish to work as a team to reach the summit.

The Trek and Expedition

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking takes you deep into the heart of the Himalayas in the Everest region. The Everest Base Camp trek with the ascent of Island Peak begins with a scenic flight offering panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan Mountains. After landing in Lukla, we start the trek, ascending the Dudh Kosi Valley surrounded by the massive peaks of Thamserku (6,623m) and Kusum Kanguru (6,367m). Kusum Kanguru, which means “Three Snow-White Gods” in Sherpa, refers to the mountain’s triple summit.

Island Peak (Imja Tse) rises impressively like an island surrounded by glaciers and towering 8,000- and 7,000-meter peaks. Along the trek, we’ll reach Kala Patthar (meaning “black rock” in Nepali), where you’ll have one of the best views of Mt. Everest. We’ll also visit Tengboche Monastery (3,860m), where you’ll experience Tibetan Buddhist culture.

One of the more physically demanding days will take us over Kongma La Pass (5,535m). Trekking at these high altitudes, we’ll reach Island Peak Base Camp (5,200m) and Everest Base Camp (5,364m), and, finally, Island Peak Summit at 6,189m.

The Climb

Sherpa Expedition & Trekking has more than 40 years of experience making people’s dreams come true. We focus on ensuring your safety and comfort during the expedition.

Island Peak climbing, part of this well-designed Everest region trek, is perfect for novice climbers. Known for its moderate snow and ice climbing, the ascent involves traversing glaciers and climbing to the summit, which rises 6,189 meters. The trek provides a comprehensive blend of trekking and climbing, making it one of the easiest trekking peaks in Nepal.

You’ll walk through Sherpa villages, cross high mountain passes, and pass glaciers before reaching Island Peak Base Camp. From there, your summit attempt begins. Ample acclimatization days will ensure your body adapts to the thin air before you make your final ascent to the top.

Safety and Preparation

Your safety is our top priority. We double-check all climbing gear and equipment, and ensure safety procedures are followed throughout the expedition. Your climbing guide, with over 20 years of experience, has summited several 8,000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest, and has reached the summit of Island Peak multiple times. To assist each climber, every two climbers will have one assistant guide.

Before the climb, you’ll receive valuable pre-climbing training at Island Peak Base Camp, which is an excellent opportunity to refresh your climbing skills. Our guides will ensure your safety and help you reach the summit.

We provide all the necessary climbing gear and equipment needed for your ascent. This will be a life-changing adventure, and we are committed to making sure you reach the summit safely and successfully.

Day 04: Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar hike to Hotel Everest View and Return

After acclimating in Namche for the first time, we will take a rest day today. Adapting to the increasing altitude and changing environment is crucial for the body to prevent altitude sickness.

To aid in our acclimatization, we will hike to Nangkartsang Peak, where the view of Ama Dablam is truly awe-inspiring. After the hike, you can explore the village or relax in the teahouse. Namche Bazaar is an ideal place for acclimatization. Health specialists recommend staying active during the day rather than sitting idle.

From Namche, you can take a short hike to the Everest View Resort, visit Thame, explore Khunde, or simply relax and explore Namche Bazaar. As the main hub of the Everest (Khumbu) region, Namche offers government offices, ATMs, internet cafes, shops, restaurants, bakeries, and a colorful market every Friday evening and Saturday. A short trek of just a hundred meters will help us further acclimatize.

Our guides will also take us to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarters of Sagarmatha National Park, where we can learn about the history of the first mountaineers to climb Everest, Sherpa culture, and the region’s diverse plant and animal life.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

The trek becomes more manageable as you enter the peaceful Imja Valley, following the course of the Lobuche River.

The final stretch involves a steep climb to Dingboche, a charming village where fields are enclosed by stone walls to protect crops such as barley, buckwheat, and potatoes from the cold winds. While today’s trek is slightly more demanding due to the higher altitude, the incredible scenery makes it a rewarding experience.

The trek from Tengboche to Dingboche is relatively short, taking about four to five hours, and is expected to be completed by the afternoon. However, the final climb into Dingboche, at this high altitude, can be challenging! The trail passes through the village of Somare (4,020 m) and continues to Orsho, both of which have lodges. Later, the trail divides, with the left path leading to Pheriche before crossing a suspension bridge and making a steep climb into Dingboche, which has several good guesthouses.

Day 08: Acclimatization at Dingboche hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083 m) Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910 m)

On this day, we begin our trek to Lobuche with a gentle climb to Thukla. From this point, we are greeted with stunning views of Taboche and Cholatse. Continuing along the route, we pass through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and come across several stone memorials.

These memorials are dedicated to the climbers who have passed away, and they are adorned with colorful prayer flags. After a brisk hike, we arrive at Lobuche village, where we can enjoy breathtaking mountain views, including those of Nuptse, Lobuche, and Pumori.

After breakfast, we start the trek with an easy walk toward Thukla, then cross the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We continue through boulder-strewn slopes, ascending to Chupki Lhara, where we find clusters of stones and prayer flags placed by Sherpas as memorials to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer) and Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepalese Sherpa guide), both of whom tragically perished on Everest expeditions.

The path then leads us to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, where we are surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks, including Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Mahalangur Himal. We will stay overnight in Lobuche.

Highest Altitude: (4,940m/16,208ft)
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

Day 09: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 m) trek to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and return to Gorak Shep (5,180 m)

Today, the trek is divided into two sections. First, we hike from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, and then continue on to Everest Base Camp.

After breakfast, we depart from Lobuche, hiking along the Khumbu Glacier while enjoying magnificent views of Mt. Nuptse. Soon, we reach the village of Gorak Shep.

From Gorak Shep, we continue our trek to Everest Base Camp. The trail becomes more challenging due to the rugged terrain, but the captivating views of the Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall make it worthwhile.

Upon reaching Base Camp, we are rewarded with a panoramic view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, Khumbutse, and the surrounding peaks. It’s an incredible feeling to stand at the base of the world’s highest mountain. During peak seasons, we may even encounter expedition teams and climbers.

After spending time at Base Camp, we retrace our steps back to Gorak Shep.

Our six to seven-hour trek takes us through the vast expanse of Gorak Shep. Along the trail, we pass memorials dedicated to the Indian army mountaineers. The path can be confusing at times, so it’s important to stay with your guide. The thin air at this high altitude can be exhausting as we traverse rocky dunes, moraines, and streams before finally reaching Everest Base Camp.

From Base Camp, we can see some of the world’s highest peaks, including Khumbutse, Nuptse, and Pumori, standing in stark contrast to the gray surroundings, especially during the spring season.

Afterward, we return to Gorak Shep for a well-earned night’s rest.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 10: Early morning hike to Kala Patthar (5,555 m) for sunrise, then descend to Pheriche (4,240 m) Trek from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,550 m) at sunrise, then return to Lobuche (4,940 m)

Today, we hike to the highest point of the Everest Base Camp Trek, Kala Patthar. The hike begins very early in the morning, offering a breathtaking sunrise view over the towering mountains. Kala Patthar provides an excellent vantage point for an incredible view of Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, and Mount Everest.

Take a moment to embrace the joy and awe of being in the lap of Mount Everest. After enjoying some quality time at the summit, we descend to Gorak Shep and continue our trek down to Pheriche village.

We begin our journey at around 4 a.m. in the pre-dawn darkness, braving cold temperatures (-10 to -14°C). Cold winds are common at this altitude. Towering peaks, such as Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Changtse, loom ahead as Everest comes into view. Once we reach Kala Patthar (5,550 m), we are rewarded with a 360-degree, up-close, bird’s-eye view of Mount Everest.

After taking in the panoramic views and snapping plenty of photos, we return to Lobuche for a well-deserved night’s rest.

After an early start, we trek for six to seven hours, passing the Khumbu Glacier, and reach Kongma La Base Camp (5000m). This is the most challenging day of our trek. The prayer flags along the pass mark the route. We then gradually descend into the Imja Khola Valley before continuing down to the small village of Chhukung, where we will review our equipment in preparation for the ascent of Island Peak. Tonight, we will stay in Chhukung. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

It’s only a short distance from here to the Base Camp, which we will reach by mid-afternoon. Accommodation will be in a tented camp, where meals will be prepared by our professional camping team. We will embark on a steep three-to-four-hour ascent to Island Peak Base Camp, crossing the moraine below Lhotse Glacier. We will then follow a small river and cross the Imja and Lhotse glacier moraines, eventually reaching a wide valley to the southwest of Island Peak. Tonight, we will stay at Island Peak Base Camp. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Highest Altitude: (5,200m/17,061ft)
Trek Duration:3 to 4 hours

Day 13: Climb Island Peak (6,187 m) and return to Chhukung (4,730 m). Pre-climb training at Island Peak Base Camp (5,200 m).

We have allowed two days for the Island Peak climb, although we will likely only need one day if weather conditions are favorable. The climbing strategy will be determined by our Sherpa leader based on factors such as the group’s acclimatization, weather, snow conditions, and other considerations.

Our Sherpa leader will provide ice climbing training to help you become proficient with climbing gear, such as ropes, ice axes, harnesses, and crampons. The camp is located just below the permanent snowline.

In the morning, we will leave very early for the final climb to the summit. This may take between four to six hours, depending on snow and weather conditions.

We will fix a rope on the summit headwall for safety during both ascent and descent. While the climb is not technically difficult, the snow slopes are crevassed, the headwall is steep, and a head for heights is essential.

Reaching the summit requires willpower and stamina, but the incredible sense of achievement at the top of this 6,187-meter peak will remain a lifelong memory.

The view from the summit is truly spectacular! Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, and Baruntse rise majestically above a sea of smaller peaks. If conditions are good, we should be able to descend to Chhukung after our summit attempt.

Today, your guides will teach you various climbing techniques and how to use an ice axe, climbing boot crampons, harnesses, ascenders, and other equipment. They will also demonstrate how to use the ropes during the ascent and descent. While the training is not overly technical, it is essential to ensure your safety and well-being. After some basic training, you will feel more confident and capable of reaching the summit.

To further aid your acclimatization, we may trek to High Camp. The rest of the day will be for rest and preparation for tomorrow’s climb. We will stay overnight at the base camp. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Highest Altitude🙁5,200m/17,061ft)
Trek Duration:  9 to 10 hours

Day 14: Spare day in case of bad weather on Island Peak. (If the weather is favorable on the climbing day, you may use this spare day anywhere on the trek or in Lukla.) Summit Island Peak (6,189 m) and return to Base Camp.

We have this spare day in case of bad weather on Island Peak. If the weather is favorable on the climbing day, you can use this spare day elsewhere on the trek.

This is the day you’ve been waiting for, and we will need to wake up around midnight to 1:00 AM to begin our 10 to 12-hour climb. The goal is to reach the summit before lunchtime, as strong winds are likely in the afternoon.

We will initially head up from Base Camp along a steep hillside, then cross boulders as the slope narrows. The trail continues across a steep gully, and from here, we follow the ridgeline to the base of the glacier, which extends all the way to the summit. A sharp incline on a snowy slope leads us to the summit. At this point, your guides will likely attach fixed ropes, with person-to-person connections. The rope will stretch up to about 350 meters, depending on the snow depth and the presence of crevices. During previous climbs, we’ve encountered crevices that required the use of ladders to cross.

Once at the summit, you’ll be able to sit back and take in some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever experience. This is a truly exhilarating moment, perfect for snapping photos. We will then descend back to Island Peak Base Camp, where we can celebrate our successful climb of Island Peak. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Gears and Equipment

Below is a list of recommended items for your hike. Please consider this as a starting point. During the winter months, layering with warmer clothing is essential. We provide a 75-liter duffel bag for your trek, which will be given to you during the pre-trip meeting in Kathmandu. The duffel bag is yours to keep.

Additionally, you can rent a sleeping bag and down jacket for an extra fee of USD 35 each, available once you’re in Kathmandu. You will be responsible for carrying all your personal gear, along with sharing some group equipment. It’s important to keep your pack light, so choose lightweight clothing and gear. Make sure to pack a range of clothing suitable for varying conditions, as sudden weather changes may require layering. Three layers will typically suffice. Avoid cotton or fabrics that don’t retain heat in cold conditions. Comfortable, durable wool (or other proven fabrics) that breathes and wicks away sweat will enhance your experience.

We will also provide complimentary water and a windproof duffel bag, which will be carried by porters during the trek. The duffel is yours to keep once the trek is complete. You can safely leave your bag, along with any non-trekking items, at our office in Kathmandu and collect them when you return.

All necessary equipment, such as base camp tents, room accessories, climbing ropes, ice screws, snow bars, and ice hammers, will be provided by Sherpa Expedition & Trekking.

FAQs for Everest Base Camp Trek

How Challenging and Difficult is it to Climb Island Peak?

Due to its high elevation, Island Peak climbing is a challenging trek, specifically suited for individuals with a high level of endurance and excellent mountaineering experience.

Additionally, climbers must navigate snow-covered passes using crampons and axes, and ascend beyond 6,000 meters in altitude. Therefore, prior experience with high-altitude trekking is highly recommended.

Island Peak is generally considered suitable for beginners looking to venture into mountaineering. However, it is essential to have prior experience trekking at high altitudes. The climb itself is difficult due to the extreme altitude, steep ascent, and thin air. The most challenging part of the climb is the foot of the headwall. Despite this, the climbing route is safe, with fixed lines leading all the way to the summit.

Island Peak is regarded as a moderately difficult climb that requires basic mountaineering skills, including the use of crampons, an ice axe, and rope techniques. Prior climbing experience and good physical fitness are strongly recommended.

What is the best season to climb Island Peak?

The best seasons to hike in the Everest Region are autumn (mid-September to November) and spring (March to early June). While this trek is possible year-round, we generally recommend undertaking it during the favorable seasons and avoiding the rainy season (July and August).

In the colder months of January and February, temperatures in the mountains can be quite harsh. However, some prefer to travel during these months due to fewer crowds, provided they are well-prepared with appropriate winter wear and gear.

Although it is possible to climb Island Peak throughout the year, except during the monsoon months, the best time to do so is during the spring and fall seasons. Spring (March to early June) is the busiest climbing season, while autumn (September to November) offers moderate temperatures and clear weather.

Climbers have attempted to climb Island Peak in winter, but the extreme cold can be perilous for some. The summer season brings rain and often obstructs views, making it less ideal for the climb.

Overall, the best times to climb Island Peak are during the pre-monsoon (spring) season (April to May) and post-monsoon (autumn) season (September to November), as these months typically offer more stable weather and clearer views.
