Phulchoki Day Hike Overview
The Phulchoki Day Hike is the perfect excursion for those seeking a single-day adventure with stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Located just 20 kilometers from Kathmandu, Phulchoki Hill is the highest point surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, standing at 2,750 meters above sea level. This hill station offers breathtaking vistas, making it a must-see destination.
Phulchoki, meaning “hill full of flowers” in Nepali, is especially vibrant in spring when its hills are adorned with a colorful tapestry of wildflowers, rhododendrons, and magnolias. In winter, the hill transforms into a serene, snow-covered landscape.
The hike begins with a short drive to Godawari, located at the base of Phulchoki Hill. From there, a trail through lush vegetation leads to the summit, offering spectacular views of the Kathmandu Valley, surrounding villages, and majestic Himalayan peaks, including Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh, Langtang, and Jugal Himal. On clear days, Mt. Everest and its range can also be seen.
Besides the stunning panoramas, the area is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to species like the Rufous-gorged and Yellow-browed Tit, Rufous-bellied Niltava, and Red-billed Leiothrix. The region also boasts diverse butterflies and wildlife, making it an ideal spot for naturalists. During March and April, visitors can observe religious ceremonies at the Phulchowki Mai Temple atop the hill.
This day hike is an ideal blend of adventure, natural beauty, and relaxation. It’s suitable for all hikers and serves as great training for more challenging treks in Nepal.
Phulchoki Hill, standing at 2,782 meters (9,127 feet), offers one of the best walking tours around Kathmandu, with panoramic views of Gauri Shankar, Dorje Lakpa, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and even Mt. Everest. Other surrounding hills like Chandragiri, Shivapuri, and Champadevi can also be seen from the peak.
The hike can be customized for both casual trekkers and those seeking a more leisurely experience. Visitors can drive directly to the top for panoramic views or enjoy the longer hike through dense forest trails. Public and private transportation options are available from Ratna Park, Kathmandu.
